More Human Than the Machine? Teaching Writing in the Era of AI

“We should approach our historical contradictions not as some bothersome burden, but rather as the building blocks of a sustainable present and an affirmative and hopeful future, even if this approach requires some drastic changes to our familiar mind-sets and established values.” — Rosi Braidotti, Posthuman Knowledge (2019)

This workshop offers college educators practical and reflective tools to engage students critically with AI-generated content and AI detection technologies. Rather than framing AI as a threat to human creativity, the approach is affirmative: emerging technologies are treated as catalysts for pedagogical innovation and deeper awareness. Participants will explore two adaptable writing activities that invite students to question what makes writing feel authentically human and how machines interpret creativity, ambiguity, and style. Through discussion and experimentation, the workshop fosters metacognition, ethical reflection, and digital literacy—key components for teaching writing in an age increasingly shaped by generative AI.
